“The Underdog’s Battle-Cry

We are not victims. We are not martyrs. We are not small, insignificant, fragile, or afraid. We are not wounded. We are not weak. We are not damaged goods. I repeat: we are not damaged goods.

We shan’t be overlooked. We shan’t be neglected, bullied, or shamed.

What’s done is done. What’s past is past. What’s happened we cannot undo.

But we will not betray ourselves.

We will not water ourselves down. We will not acquiesce for the sake of acquiescing. We will not hide behind facades. We will not retreat in fear. We will stand our ground.

We will show ourselves compassion. We will love ourselves in all our glory- black, white, skinny, fat, rich, poor, young and old, just the same.

We might cry some rivers. We might make a little mess. But we will show ourselves some long-awaited, fucking self-respect.

What’s done is done. What’s past is past. What’s happened we cannot undo.

But going forward we will alchemize, transcend… and make our grand debut.

We will accept. We will forgive. It might take a little time. But while we wait, we’ll learn for ourselves that being who we are– just the way we are–is not a curse or crime.

We have voices. We have thoughts. We have dreams and bold intentions.

We’re not hiding anymore. We’re not playing the roles we don’t want to play anymore. We’re not playing by the so-called rules.

We’re busting out. We’re breaking through. We’re claiming what’s rightfully ours: our true selves, our real selves, the selves we somehow left behind.

What’s done is done. What’s past is past. What’s happened we cannot undo.

But we’re out in the open now and we are more than just a few.”
